Prince Harry may have potentially thwarted hopes of a reconciliation with the Royal Family once more.
Only months ago, the Duke of Sussex appeared to be making genuine headway in mending the strained relationship he’s experienced with his father, King Charles, in recent years. Although their September encounter was extremely short, it appeared productive, with Harry demonstrating clear signs of hope about visiting the UK to see his father once more, possibly bringing his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, along.
Despite the relationship seemingly taking a constructive direction, Daily Express royal reporter Jasmine Carey finds it hard to believe Harry’s latest remarks concerning the royals will have been well-received.
During a surprise public engagement on Friday, Harry appeared on stage at the British American Business Council’s (BABC) LA lunch.
The Duke, 41, appeared eager to display his sense of humor during the event, delivering what he likely considered lighthearted jokes, reports the Daily Express.
Among these was a remark drawing parallels between the Royal Family and the television series Downton Abbey. He stated, “People sometimes ask if growing up with the Royal Family was a bit like… Downton Abbey.”
He continued, “Yeah, but only one of those worlds is filled with drama, intrigue, elaborate dinners, marriages to Americans – and the other is a TV show.”
While this remark elicited laughter from the audience, it likely wasn’t as amusing for the Royal Family across the Atlantic.
“Why?”, Jasmine asks.
“Because it’s a jab at the institution,” she believes.
“Moreover, isn’t Prince Harry arguably the most significant source of ‘drama’ – perhaps second only to his scandal-ridden uncle Andrew – within the Royal Family?
“If this comment didn’t already make the royals shake their heads and question the Duke’s reliability, his jest about American President Donald Trump‘s immigration policies surely did.”
During his speech about the upcoming World Cup, the prince humorously suggested that Brits would need to “behave, get through customs and past ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)” to watch England compete in the tournament.
This marks the second time in recent weeks that Harry has poked fun at Trump, which could once again place the Royal Family in an uncomfortable position, particularly given their seemingly cordial relationship with the US President.
Nobody enjoys awkward situations. “So, Harry, the next time you’re aiming for a few chuckles from an audience, perhaps leave your Royal kin and political commentary out of it.
“Because you may have just dashed hopes of a successful Royal reconciliation… yet again.”
