Prince Harry will be joined by Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, when he returns to the UK in just a matter of weeks, after feeling “great sadness” at the disconnect with his home country.
News.com.au can exclusively reveal that the entire family is planning to make the trip from Montecito, California, in line with the Duke of Sussex’s One Year To Go Invictus events in Birmingham, in mid-July.
It does not appear there are plans for the family to relocate to the UK permanently at this stage.
“It’s been a real point of great sadness – for Harry especially – that he’s been unable to bring his wife and kids back to the UK safely to reconnect with friends and family, but anyone would understand his desire to put their safety first,” a source close to Harry told news.com.au of his decision.
“He would love to introduce the children to his wider family, to show them the UK, where he grew up – his homeland. That would be a natural thing for any parent.”
News.com.au has reached out to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for comment.
While Harry has made several trips back to his home country in the six years since quitting royal duties, Meghan – and the kids – usually stay home.
In fact, it’s been almost four years since Meghan’s last UK visit. She and Harry were in Britain for work commitments in September 2022 when Queen Elizabeth II passed away, prompting them to extend their stay.
The couple have only been back with their children once, in 2022, to take part in events surrounding the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
And Harry and Meghan have each had complex relationships with Britain; the pair were even booed by some members of the public during an official engagement alongside the royal family in June of the Jubilee year.
This will be Meghan’s first high-profile return since the late Queen’s funeral – but the insider insisted she had no concerns about her reception there.
“Meghan’s strong and much more resilient than people give her credit for – she’s had to grow the thickest of skin to deal with the daily barrage of unnecessary and frankly, dangerous, hate that is spread about her,” the source said.
“ … But Meghan loves the UK and knows that the vast, vast majority of people are reasonable, rational and good.”
While Archie, 7, spent most of his first year of life in the UK, his sister Lili, 5, was born in the US.
Her only visit to Britain coincided with her first birthday, which she celebrated with her family at Harry and Meghan’s former home, Frogmore Cottage, in Windsor.
That 2022 trip was the only time the King has seen his grandchildren in person since Harry and Meghan’s relocation to the US in 2020.
Recently, it’s become increasingly clear that Harry wants to spend more time with his father, who is living with cancer, following a challenging few years after his abrupt royal exit. Both Harry and Meghan have opened up about their strained relationships with members of his family, including in their explosive Oprah Winfrey interview, their Netflix docu-series, and the duke’s memoir, Spare.
Last September, while Harry was in the UK for charity commitments, he and his father had a long-awaited – albeit brief – reunion after 18 months at the King’s London residence, Clarence House.
But as Harry has stated publicly, the sticking point for him in bringing the rest of his family to the UK has always been his concerns over their security.
In May 2025, Harry lost his appeal to reinstate his taxpayer-funded security in the UK, which was replaced with a “bespoke” arrangement after he stepped back as a working royal. He described the decision as an “establishment stitch-up” in an explosive BBC interview in the aftermath of the bruising loss.
Ahead of their UK visit, the source pointed out that Harry wouldn’t come if the planned security presence felt in any way inadequate.
“There are individuals and groups that wish to do him and his family harm. Whether you like them or not, no sane person would want anything to happen to him, his wife or their kids,” they said.
“ … You can be assured that if they are coming [to Britain], then he’s satisfied that the conditions have been met to keep them all as safe as possible.”
In what was seen as a dramatic U-turn back in December, it was revealed that Britain’s Home Office had decided to review Harry’s police protection despite his court loss. There has yet to be a public update on the outcome of the threat assessment, which is the first undertaken for Harry since 2020.
During the BBC interview last year, Harry said: “I can’t see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point.”
He also claimed he could “only come to the UK safely” if invited by the King, as he would then be included within royal protection.
Given his previous hard line stance on their security, it therefore seems likely that either something has changed with his protection arrangement … or that a royal invitation has, in fact, been extended.
