Prince Harry has been outspoken over the past year about his desire for reconciliation with his Royal family members. Several relationships have deteriorated since he stepped back from Royal duties in 2020.
In May, the Duke of Sussex, 40, revealed in an interview with the BBC that he wished to end disputes with his relatives and repair those bonds, particularly with his father, King Charles.
Nevertheless, while it remains Harry’s goal to mend fences with his family, one Royal expert suggests that the duke could make one decision that might “restart conflict”.
This week, widespread reports emerged that the prince and his wife, Meghan Markle, 44, may be considering developing a Princess Diana documentary set for release in 2027 to commemorate 30 years since her tragic death in a car accident in Paris.
The documentary, which has allegedly only been discussed at this point, could potentially be pitched to Netflix as part of the couple’s “first look” agreement with the streaming platform.
He added: “This program, especially now that Camilla, the woman she (Diana) regarded as her rival, is now Queen Consort, also, potentially, has enormous dangers for Harry’s future relationships with his family.”
Fitzwilliams went on to say: “If reconciliation is desirable, but seems unlikely, peace is essential. This documentary, if it happens, could restart the conflict.”
At this point, the documentary is only in the discussion phase, and its production is not guaranteed.
Should it proceed, it won’t be the first time Harry has publicly addressed his mother’s death, having done so in previous documentaries and in writing.
In his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry candidly discussed the impact of losing his mother at the tender age of 12. He also opened up about his last phone call with Diana.
He penned: “She’d called early in the evening, the night of the crash, but I was running around with Willy and my cousins and didn’t want to stop playing, so I’d been short with her. Impatient to get back to my games. I wished I’d searched for the words to describe how much I loved her.”
