When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 and moved to California, they didn’t hold back in sharing their experiences within the royal family, leading to a tense relationship with the monarchy.
Their candid revelations ranged from their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 to Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare.
The Sussexes frequently discussed their treatment within the royal family and the reasons behind their departure, often circling back to these topics even during discussions about other matters, such as their philanthropic endeavors.
A prime example occurred in 2022 when Harry attended the Invictus Games in The Hague, Netherlands.
While appearing on NBC’s US morning show Today to talk about his involvement in the event, the conversation inevitably veered back towards the royal family.
During his frank discussion with host Hoda Kotb, Harry disclosed that he and Meghan had briefly stopped in the UK for a private tea with the late Queen Elizabeth en route to the Netherlands.
This visit to Windsor Castle marked their first return to the UK since stepping down from their Royal roles in 2020, reports the Mirror.
In the interview that followed shortly after, Harry asserted his commitment to ensuring his beloved grandmother was “protected and got the right people around her.”
He revealed that it had been wonderful to encounter her “in some element of privacy,” stating, “It was so nice to see her. She’s in great form. She’s always got a great sense of humor with me.”
The Duke also claimed that the late Queen would share secrets with him that she couldn’t reveal to “anybody else.”
After the shocking interview and the Prince’s assertions about the late Queen, Harry was hit with charges of “breathtaking arrogance,” with “no bounds to his self-delusion.”
Royal authority Tom Bower also penned in his book Revenge, that Harry’s remarks made it appear that “King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince William and all of the Queen’s staff were inadequate for the task.”
With growing public worries for the late Queen’s health following the interview, Harry’s statements also triggered an unusual response from Downing Street who were compelled to reject his implication that the Queen required better protection.
When questioned whether the prime minister had confidence in the security measures at the time to guarantee the Queen’s safety, a representative for Boris Johnson, then prime minister, was direct, as they simply answered, “Yes.”
Following Harry’s NBC interview, the royal family attempted to shield the Queen from additional rumors as they marked what would become the Monarch’s last birthday before her heartbreaking death in September of that year.
