It could have been a smashing introduction to royal life for seven-year-old Prince Louis.
After hearing of his passion for stashing conkers all over Kensington Palace, the World Conker Championships wrote to his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, with the offer of his first official role – as their honorary patron.
Sadly for the prince (and the wider conkering community) they politely declined on the grounds that their youngest son should be focusing on school work, not indulging in the popular autumn nut-wrecking game.
A palace spokesman said: “We really appreciate the invite but currently Prince Louis is ‘conker-trating’ on his studies.”
The request came after the Princess, who is joint president of the Scouts and an enthusiastic advocate of spending time in nature, revealed her son’s latest passion during a conversation with Dwayne Fields, the Chief Scout, last month.
