Prince William issues heartfelt speech at Royal Albert Hall for David Attenborough’s 100th birthday

It began with a touching film of King Charles delivering a birthday message for Sir David. The movie depicted the monarch writing a heartwarming letter to his friend, and enlisting an array of beloved British animals to ensure it reached its end destination.

The evening was then bookended by William, who delivered an equally moving tribute to the legendary broadcaster; a rousing speech that left the Royal Albert Hall in raptures of applause, and Sir David almost emotional.

William began by stating the rarity of celebrating a 100th birthday. “But it is rarer still when that person has transformed the way we see the only home that we have – Planet Earth,” he added.

He went on to commend Sir David’s “boundless curiosity, gentle wisdom and unwavering dedication” during his address at the landmark event, which was broadcast on the BBC.

The prince described the naturalist as a “guiding light in the work we now undertake to safeguard the natural world.”

He noted that Sir David had educated countless individuals about both the splendour and vulnerability of our planet.

The pair are known to share a close relationship, and William even helped promote his film, Ocean with David Attenborough, last year.

“Through your support in establishing the Earthshot Prize, we are now striving to turn your inspiration into action, to champion those solutions that are creating a more sustainable future for us all,” William said.

The prince revealed that his own children have been profoundly influenced by Sir David’s remarkable body of work.

Princes George and Louis, along with Princess Charlotte, “have grown up with your incredible storytelling,” William told the centenarian.

He explained that the broadcaster’s programmes had served as a window into nature’s wonders for millions across the globe, including the young royals.
