Prince William and Kate Middleton don’t want a robust royal schedule, but not everyone is pleased by that idea.
Republic, an anti-monarchy group in the U.K., is making sure the Prince and Princess of Wales understand that they are waging a campaign against them. They want citizens to know “just how little the royals do” by revealing their calendar. According to The National, William has worked 13 days over the last two and a half months, but some engagements are so “brief” that it’s “the full-time equivalent of three to four days of engagements.” Yikes!
Graham Smith, the chief executive of the group, told the Scottish media outlet that William and Kate are “particularly lazy” members of the royal family. “The palace likes to paint a picture of busy royals supporting good causes,” he criticized the palace. “The reality is a work-shy family who occasionally patronize charities – usually a short drive from Windsor – to give an entirely false impression.”

He wants “full and honest disclosure about just how little the royals do and the negligible impact they have on public life.” Smith has been a thorn in the side of the royal family ever since Republic protested at King Charles’ coronation in May 2023. While Smith is critical of the entire royal family, William appears to be at the top of his hit list — and a few members of the palace might agree with the anti-monarchist.
Tina Brown’s Sept. 10 Fresh Hell Substack reported that King Charles was frustrated by his eldest son’s light work schedule. “After five confirmed family vacations in the past seven months, William’s first-week-back diary pulsated with two outings: a father-daughter excursion to a Women’s Rugby World Cup pool match and a stroll through the Natural History Museum’s new gardens,” Brown wrote, while explaining that Charles “has carried out official engagements on 175 days during the past 12 months” amid his cancer battle.
Princess Anne is also reportedly “annoyed” that her nephew refuses to do “more of the ‘bread-and-butter’ royal engagements” for the palace, according to a piece by The Times in July. “She’s still doing most of the investitures [at Windsor] even though William lives there. It annoys her,” a palace insider revealed.
According to a 2024 report by the Republic, the royal family costs U.K. taxpayers almost $670 million per year, so that might be why they want William and Kate to get to work. The royal couple has not addressed the issue, but Smith is likely going to stay on their case.
