Princess Kate Middleton has no issue poking fun at husband Prince William, especially when it comes to his lack of hair.
Former royal butler Grant Harrold recalled “having a conversation about getting older” with Kate and William, both now 43, in his upcoming book, The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life of Royal Service.
The trio was sitting in the kitchen at the royal family’s home at Highgrove in Gloucestershire, Harrold recalled in the memoir — set to be released later this month — when the discussion of balding came up.
“I said that surely the worst thing about aging was losing your hair and going bald,” Harrold wrote, according to an excerpt obtained exclusively by Us Weekly. “Kate started sniggering and William gave me a look and said, ‘Thanks for that.’ It hadn’t occurred to me that, of course, by then he was starting to lose his hair.”
Harrold noted that there was “always this joke” about not mentioning William’s “bald patch.” However, the Prince of Wales was a good sport.
“He always took any comments, intended or otherwise, in good humor,” Harrold added.
Harrold also spoke about this particular memory in an interview with People published on Tuesday, September 2.
“I said, ‘From a man’s point of view, the worst is when you start receding, you start going bald,’” Harrold recalled. “Kate started sniggering, and I looked over at William and he said, ‘Thanks, Grant!’ and leaned forward to show his hair.”
Harrold recalled William getting back at him not long after. The former butler said he got a fake tan that led to some laughs.
“William said, ‘What have you done? Has it gone everywhere?’ and being told yes, he repeated, ‘Everywhere?’ I said it was ‘everywhere.’ He said, ‘Can I see it?’” Harrold said. “I had to take my shoes and socks off to show him my toes, which were orange!”

Harrold detailed his seven years working with the royal family in the upcoming memoir. In the People interview, the former butler praised working for both William and Prince Harry.
“You hear these stories about their mother [Princess Diana] and how she would go in the kitchens and sit on the worktops and have chats,” he said. “What was nice about her boys is they were the same.”
Harrold said that King Charles III, Kate, William and Harry would “always thank people.” He remembered the family as being “grateful” for those helping them.
“They would always come and find you and thank you for what you’d done,” he recalled.
The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life of Royal Service is set to be released on Tuesday, September 23.
