King Charles was just in the U.S. for a state visit, but Prince William decided to stay home, declining Donald Trump’s invitation. And now that William is reportedly heading to the U.S. this summer, it may leave the U.S. President feeling slighted.
While William had a legitimate reason for turning down the offer — his planned attendance at the World Cup this summer — it’s being suggested that Trump may take offense at the implication that the royal chose soccer over him.
We spoke exclusively to Lynn Carratt about the turn of events, with the PR expert saying that was not the intent and if Trump is upset by this, it reflects poorly on him.
“If Donald Trump were to perceive it as a slight, that would likely be more reflective of Trump’s personality and political style than William’s intentions,” said Carratt.
“The Royal Family tends to operate above that kind of overt political theater,” she added.
William is scheduled to be in the U.S. this coming June for the World Cup and there’s talk of him extending his visit to stay for the 250th Anniversary of the U.S. Independence.
“As for the possibility of William extending his stay for America’s 250th Independence celebrations, it would not be surprising at all,” said Carratt.
“The monarchy understands symbolism better than almost anyone, and being present, even briefly, during such a landmark moment in U.S. history would carry huge diplomatic value.”
If Trump did feel slighted, it’s unlikely he will hold a grudge, and would be happy to host William at the White House, according to Carratt.
“If schedules aligned, I absolutely think a White House appearance is possible, particularly given reports that William and Trump had a cordial rapport during their meeting in Paris at the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris.”
According to Carratt, the visit goes beyond the U.S. and the current political climate, he’s preparing for when it’s his time to take the throne.
“William has become increasingly confident on the world stage, and these kinds of carefully choreographed appearances help reinforce his future king credentials internationally.”
