Prince William was “sick with worry” ahead of the release of Prince Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, according to a new book.
Author Christopher Anderson claims in his latest book, Kate!: The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen, the then-Duchess of Cambridge had heard “her husband retching in the bathroom” in the days beforehand, amid concerns over what his estranged brother and sister-in-law might reveal.
He added that the future King was “too distracted to think of food”.
Given the explosive allegations made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the March 2021 tell-all, William was probably right to be concerned. Among the most shocking was Meghan’s claim that Kate had made her cry during a row over the bridesmaids’ dresses for her royal wedding, that unnamed members of the royal family had raised “concerns” over their unborn child’s skin colour, that the Palace had disregarded Meghan’s mental health issues, and that a rift did exist between Harry and his brother.
William was the first royal to publicly address the allegations in the days after the Winfrey interview aired, telling journalists covering a visit to a London school that they are “very much not a racist family”.
He was also asked on camera whether he’d been in contact with Harry, to which he responded: “No, I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I will do.”
The Duke of Sussex and the Prince of Wales have reportedly not spoken since the late Queen’s funeral in September 2022, with William said to be furious at Harry and Meghan’s media attacks on him and his wife since their royal departure
Meanwhile, in an updated edition of Valentine Low’s royal book Courtiers, released in 2023, he reported that Kate had been instrumental in including the famous “recollections may vary” line in the Palace’s response to the Winfrey interview.
An initial draft of the statement was reportedly “much milder”, but both William and his wife wanted it “toughened up a bit”.
“They were both of one mind that we needed something that said that the institution did not accept a lot of what had been said,” he wrote.
“He said, ‘It is really important that you guys come up with the right way of making sure that we are saying that this does not stand.’ She was certainly right behind him on it.”
In reference to the “recollections may vary” portion, as a source told Low: “It was Kate who clearly made the point, ‘History will judge this statement and unless this phrase or a phrase like it is included, everything that they have said will be taken as true.’”
