The Earthshot Prize aims to find ways to protect and repair the environment with innovative solutions.
The £50m global initiative, launched in 2020, awards five £1m prizes annually across the themes of clean air, oceans, waste-reduction, climate change and restoring nature.
Over the past few years, the finalists have captured 4.8 million tonnes of CO2, stopped 250,000 tons of waste reaching landfill and restored more than one million square kilometres of land and oceans.
Kensington Palace has not yet confirmed which members of the Royal family will be attending this year’s awards, scheduled for November, but the Prince is all but guaranteed to attend. The Princess of Wales has remained at home with their three children for the last four ceremonies.
After the announcement of Mumbai as host city, Devendra Fadnavis, the chief minister of Maharashtra state, said: “The Earthshot Prize is the world’s most prestigious environmental award and I’m proud to announce that it will be hosted in Mumbai in November.
“Sustainability and climate action remain top priorities for Maharashtra, and the Earthshot Prize will create global attention for India’s leadership and commitment to turning our goals into meaningful action on the ground.”
