Princess Anne appeared to pose a clever comeback so that she avoided speaking about her disgraced brother Andrew Mountbatten Windsor in Australia. The 75-year-old arrived in Australia last week, with the royal now set travel to Singapore for two days.
Her latest visit meant that she was absent from all events in the UK across Remembrance Weekend. Andrew was stripped of all his royal titles and honours last month due to his connection to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with the royal also set to be evicted from Royal Lodge very soon.
During her appearance at a garden party marking the centenary of the Royal Australian Signal Corps, Anne met serviceman James Thorpe, who told her that he had previously encountered her “brother”.
In a prompt reply, Anne quickly responded: “Which one? I have three.”
He then clarified his reference by stating: “Ah, that’s the main one, Ma’am”.
Anne’s response prompted laughter from those present, which appeared to deflect attention away from any awkwardness surrounding the highly-controversial royal.
As well as his aunt, Prince William also encountered a similar situation during his recent visit to Brazil.
A reporter appeared to press him about recent family developments, with the royal brushing over the question and focusing on the work he has done with Earthshot Prize.
Rather than discussed his uncle, William replied: “I think the Earthshot Prize is a classic example of change. Rather than talk about it, we’re doing it.”
It remains unclear where Andrew will leave after he is evicted from Royal Lodge, although he reportedly has his eye on Frogmore Cottage.
