Princess Anne is said to enjoy healthy, vitamin-dense foods over rich and decadent dishes, but one thing she eats is slightly bizarre. The Princess Royal reportedly starts her day with fruit, with a special request for bananas – overripe and going off.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady told TODAY: “Princess Anne almost always preferred the bananas almost black – overripe – because they digested easier.” Brown bananas are sweeter because the starch and chlorophyll in the fruit have broken down into sugar. Royals traditionally always eat with cutlery, so Anne likely eats her overripe bananas in a very specific way. Darren explained: “First, the ends of the banana are cut off. Then the banana peel is sliced down the middle from end to end so the unpeeled fruit can be opened. The fruit is sliced into circles and eaten with a fork.” She is known to frequently skip lunch, much the same as her brother King Charles, but she doesn’t go hungry.
Princess Anne tends to have an emergency fruit in her bag in case she feels peckish throughout the day. Her daughter, Zara Tindall, revealed: “She always has a kiwi fruit.” Kiwis have more vitamin C than an orange and lots of vitamin K.
She is also known to enjoy kippers, having sent a letter to Fortune Kippers in Whitby North Yorkshire about her fondness for their product. The company’s website reveals: “Members of the Royal Family have also been known to enjoy our kippers and HRH Princess Anne has written to Barry and Derek telling them how much she enjoys their kippers.”
Anne’s favourite meal was revealed in 2020 when she guest-edited an edition of Country Life for her 70th birthday – deviled pheasant.
The Ritz’s executive chef, John Williams, explained: “Basically, a couple of whole pheasants are poached, then taken off the bone, shredded and kept warm in the poaching juices.
“You just add freshly whipped cream, left in the fridge for an hour to stiffen, mixed with a good amount of Green Label mango chutney.”
John added that Anne’s perfect accompaniment is Sharwood’s Green Label chutney.
