Supporters of Princess Diana have condemned allegations that the late Royal was “cold” and “distant, except in the presence of paparazzi.”
Juan Carlos I, Spain’s former monarch who reigned from 1975 to 2014, has made controversial remarks about Diana, Princess of Wales in his forthcoming memoirs, scheduled for release next week. In the book, titled Reconciliation, he also refutes claims of an affair with Diana, describing her as “cold, taciturn, distant, except in the presence of paparazzi.”
However, admirers of the princess have denounced the publication, rallying to Diana’s defense. One person commented online: “This is repulsive… This is really not kind.”
Another wrote: “It’s completely undignified.” A third supporter argued it was inappropriate for Juan Carlos to criticize someone who has passed away, reports the Mirror.
They posted online: “Dead people can’t answer back.” An additional Diana admirer stated: “Nobody cares what you have to say. Princess Diana was always a better person than you.”
Diana visited the Marivent Palace, the Spanish Royal family’s summer residence in Palma de Mallorca, on four different occasions with Prince Charles, William and Harry during the 1980s. These visits occurred during the initial years of Juan Carlos’ rule, which commenced days after Francisco Franco’s death.
Juan Carlos I, 87, has been wed to Sophia of Greece and Denmark since 1962 but in the memoirs rejected any suggestion of a romantic relationship with Diana. She was rumored to have had multiple affairs during her lifetime, including speculation about a relationship with bodyguard Barry Mannakee in the 1980s.
However, fans were not pleased with the allegations Juan Carlos I made about affairs. One fan expressed their discontent on social media, asking: “Why say this now when Princess Diana has been gone 28 years?” Another chimed in: “Never speak ill of the dead.”
Yet another comment read: “Diana is not able to reply from beyond the grave, so why say things like this now?”
On the other hand, Diana reportedly confessed in a recorded conversation, seemingly about Mr Mannakee: “I was only happy when he was around. I was like a little girl in front of him the whole time, desperate for praise. Desperate.”
In 1986, Mr Mannakee was reassigned to the Diplomatic Protection Squad after his superiors deemed his relationship with Diana as “inappropriate.”
