The future of the British monarchy is relying on two people.
A Wednesday, May 20 report in People paints a stark picture of just how much is riding on Princess Kate and Prince William — and what happens to the Firm if they stumble.
“There is no institution without them,” royal author Catherine Mayer said.
King Charles III, 77, has done his part. His recent U.S. visit steadied a royal family that has sailed through more turbulence than most in recent memory. But Charles is still undergoing cancer treatment. Time, insiders say, is not on anyone’s side.

The pressures surrounding the family show no sign of easing. Ex-Prince Andrew continues to navigate the fallout from his ties to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, even though he’s repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
Meanwhile, the rift with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle remains as wide as ever.

“It will always be a throbbing wound in the background,” Queen Elizabeth‘s former press secretary Ailsa Anderson added in the report.
The monarchy has also been sharply pared back. William, 43, and Kate are now the youngest senior working royals. Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, are years away from taking on public duties of their own.
“Princess Anne and the other senior working royals are all stretched thin — and none of them are young,” Mayer told the outlet. “William and Catherine carry the whole thing.”

Kate’s two-day visit to Reggio Emilia, Italy — her first overseas trip since announcing she was in remission from cancer in early 2025 — came at just the right moment, the outlet reported.
“There’s no denying that everyone concerned has been missing the princess’s star quality. She is a huge draw wherever she goes,” royal author Russell Myers, who wrote William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, added.

“Catherine is undoubtedly a central force in the monarchy’s popularity and ability to achieve its goals and move forward. There is no better time for her to return.”
The pressure does not let up. “For the moment, after that period of unprecedented turbulence, they are doing a very good job of making it look like the ship is steady,” Mayer added. “That is why Kate is so important.”
“Charles is the incumbent, but she and William are the future,” Mayer pointed out. “There is no institution without them.”
