An amphibious landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula began on April 25, 1915. However, after eight months’ fighting and approximately 250,000 casualties on each side, the land campaign was abandoned and the invasion force withdrawn.
The campaign is considered by some to be the beginning of Australian and New Zealand national consciousness and Anzac Day, the anniversary of the landings, is the most significant commemoration of military casualties and veterans by the two countries.
