PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — This weekend’s box office could belong to one movie in a big way.
According to Boxoffice Pro, all eyes are on Amazon MGM’s newest release, “Project Hail Mary,” which is projected to open north of $70 million. If that happens, it would mark the biggest debut of 2026 so far and could become the year’s first true blockbuster.
The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi film is generating strong early reviews and plenty of buzz heading into the weekend.
Holding down the number two spot, Disney Pixar’s “Hoppers” is expected to remain strong in its third weekend in theaters. Boxoffice Pro projects the animated film will bring in between $15 million and $20 million as families continue showing up.
Coming in at number three is Universal’s “Reminders of Him” in its second weekend. The film is projected to earn between $10 million and $15 million.
Jack’s Review: Project Hail Mary
This film completely caught me off guard.
I went in totally blind. I didn’t read the book it’s based on, didn’t watch the trailers, and didn’t know much about it, but this movie pulls you in fast. Ryan Gosling plays a scientist who wakes up alone in space and quickly realizes he might be humanity’s last hope.
What I didn’t expect was that this story isn’t just about saving Earth.
Along the way, he meets an alien he names Rocky, because he literally looks like a rock. The two of them are on the same mission, just for different worlds, and that unlikely friendship becomes the heart of the movie.
Visually, this film is gorgeous. A lot of it feels practical, like real sets and environments, and it really makes you feel like you’re right there with him in space.
This might be my favorite performance from Gosling. He carries a lot of this movie on his own, and he does it really well.
I also loved that this isn’t a sequel or a franchise film. It’s just a really original and creative story, and movies like that are becoming harder to find.
Overall, it’s a really fun and intriguing ride. I’m giving “Project Hail Mary” a 9 out of 10.
