Diane Martel, a prolific music video director who has been behind the timeless visuals for such artists as Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake, Sting, and Jennifer Lopez, died Thursday after a battle with breast cancer. She was 63.

The director’s family released a statement to Rolling Stone confirming the her death.

“Diane passed away peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital—surrounded by friends and family—after a long battle with breast cancer,” the family said.

Diane Martel was born in New York City on May 7, 1962. After beginning her career as a street artist and creating dance-focused documentaries funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the director directed her first music video, for Onyx’s “Throw Ya Gunz” (1992). She would then work with Mariah Carey on several videos, such as “Dreamlover” (1993), “All I Want for Christmas Is You, (1994), and “Whenever You Call (1997).

The director would go on to have a prolific career for the next two decades, directing videos such as Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You,” Beyoncé’s “Listen,” Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” and three of Miley Cyrus’ songs, “Malibu,” “Younger Now,” and “We Can’t Stop.” Martel also served as the creative director of Cyrus’s Bangerz Tour in 2014.

Ciara, who worked with Martel on her latest video for “Ecstasy,” posted a tribute to the director shortly after the announcement of her death.
