Proposed entertainment complex in Lee County dead

LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – Plans to build an entertainment complex in Lee County have officially been shelved. Instead, county leaders say the property will be used for a long-anticipated hospital project that’s been in the works for nearly a decade.

According to the Lee County Development Authority, the more than 160-acre site located off Ledo Road near Grand Island may one day be the future home of a hospital and additional commercial developments.

The hospital project was first introduced in 2016 but has faced multiple hurdles, including the need for a state-issued certificate of need. That major roadblock began to ease earlier this year when the Georgia Senate passed legislation in March 2024 to loosen restrictions on healthcare facility permits.

The shift in plans comes after the contract for the previously proposed “Grand Island Park” entertainment development expired. The Development Authority board then chose to go in a different direction.

When asked whether land surveys have begun specifically for the hospital, officials said they could not give a definitive answer due to the number of moving parts involved. However, they emphasized that progress is being made and they’re hoping to make that known to the public soon.

Developers had also been eyeing property between Kohl’s and the AMC Theater across from Grand Island for a potential skating rink. However, those plans fell through as part of the land is owned by Kohl’s, who can decide what can or can’t go there.
