Queen Elizabeth II reportedly had a heated phone conversation with her grandson, Prince Harry, regarding Meghan Markle’s spending patterns, according to claims made by a Royal author.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex tied the knot in May 2018, but their tenure as working royals was brief after they chose to step down from their duties in 2020. Throughout the years, various reports have suggested that the Duchess was “disappointed” with Harry’s financial situation, as she had allegedly expected more. Now, a Royal author has asserted that her spending behavior even managed to frustrate the late Queen.
During an appearance on the Daily T podcast, author Robert Jobson revealed that the late Queen was “annoyed” when Harry called her around 5pm while she was enjoying afternoon tea, but was particularly irritated by her grandson’s financial request. Host Camilla Tominey stated: “She (the late Queen) took a call from Harry and then reportedly remarked, ‘more money,’ rolling her eyes.”
Mr Jobson responded: “Yeah, I think that she got fed up.”, reports the Express. He noted that the Palace had “spent a lot of money” providing support to the couple.
The author explained: “[Harry] was then saying ‘oh I never got any [money] – he did. He got many thousands of pounds. More than we can probably know. To the point where the King said, ‘I’m not a bank anymore’, so that’s quite telling.”
The author then claimed that the late Queen was unimpressed with Meghan’s expenditure on clothing during her period as a Royal. Ms Tominey proceeded to note that “the [late] Queen thought Meghan was spending too much on clothes”, prompting Mr Jobson to respond: “She did. But some people might criticise that as in the 1940s and 1950s, when she was being dressed for these tours, there was a lot of money being spent on royal tours.”
Ms Tominey then raised a question: “But maybe not £60,000 on one Dior gown she wore during the 2019 Morocco tour?”
Mr Jobson answered: “That was seen as over the top… not sending the right message. The Queen, at the end, was always about the right message. Throughout her life, she got it exactly right.”
In 2019, the Daily Mail suggested that the Duchess’s clothing choices for her Morocco tour with Harry came with a price tag of approximately £110,000.
