Quicksand Announce New Album ‘Bring On The Psychics’

The first time around, celebrity.land-hardcore heroes Quicksand only released two albums, 1993’s Slip and 1995’s Manic Compression. Both of them are absolute classics. Pre-Quicksand, frontman Walter Schreifels had already been in Youth Of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, and a bunch of other great ’80s New York hardcore bands. But in the ’90s, Schreifels got together with some other hardcore vets and made churning, melodic music that brought in hits of shoegaze and grunge. His band Quicksand signed with a major label in the post-Nirvana wave and headlined the first Warped Tour. They never fully took off, but they made great music. Now, they’re doing it again.

Quicksand broke up in 1995 and reunited in 2012. (These days, almost all of Schreifels’ old bands have reunited. In addition to Quicksand, he has been playing shows with Youth Of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, and Rival Schools.) Since getting back together, Quicksand have cranked out two very good LPs, 2017’s Interiors and 2021’s Distant Populations. They also dropped a surprise split with Hot Water Music in 2024. Today, Quicksand announce a third reunion album, which means that Quicksand 2.0 is now officially more prolific than the original version.

This summer. Quicksand will release Bring On The Psychics, which they recorded with Drug Church/Drain producer Jon Markson. It’s the first Quicksand album since bassist Sergio Vega parted ways with Deftones. Today, they’ve shared two new singles, “Get To It” and “Regenerate,” which have a lot of the churning, bouncing energy of classic Deftones. In particular, “Get To It” sounds like a more expansive version of the New York hardcore that Schreifels made in the pre-Deftones days. Here’s what Schreifels says about both songs:

It’s tough to talk about your own music and what it means, not only because I sometimes don’t understand it myself but in a way it robs the listener of their own interpretation. So if you don’t want that, read no further. Otherwise, with “Get To It” and “Regenerate” we wanted to do something high-energy and straightforward with a positive feeling. “Get To It” is about “getting to it,” poking holes in the excuses for standing still. Procrastination is something I’ve struggled with my whole life, so I’m always looking for a new mantra to help overcome my tendency to put things off.

“Regenerate” is about finding new paths forward. It’s a theme I think we all return to. No matter how well you play it, life will keep taking things away from you. It sucks but this is how we learn and grow as people, so it might be we’re living the most when faced with having to get back up from a hard hit.

I cannot believe that Walter Schreifels struggles with procrastination. I mean, I’m sure he thinks he does, but if he’s putting things off, what the fuck are the rest of us doing? Anyway. “Get To It” has a video from director Jesse Korman. Below, check out both new Quicksand songs, as well as the Bring On The Psychics tracklist and the band’s upcoming tour dates, which are mostly in Europe.
