Actor Rami Heuberger has died in a Tel Aviv hospital at the age of 61 following a battle with cancer. The Israeli star gained international recognition thanks to roles in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar winning Schindler’s List, the biopic Golda and the acclaimed series In Therapy.
In 1993 he portrayed real life Polish-born Israeli artist, animator, and writer Joseph Bau, who became known as the “Israeli Walt Disney”, in the Oscar winning World War II epic Schindler’s List. Bau was sent to Brünnlitz labor camp operated by Oskar Schindler. The scene portraying his wedding between he and his wife Rebecca Tennenbaum, played in the film by Beata Deskur, which was secretly conducted in the Kraków-Płaszów concentration camp, was one of the movies most memorable moments. One of his most recent roles was in 2023’s Golda where he played Israeli military leader and politician Moshe Dayan, opposite Helen Mirren in the titular role of Golda Meir, the 4th Prime Minister of Israel, during the Yom Kippur War.
Tributes flooded in for the star as news of his death became public. “Great Israeli actor Rami Heuberger passed away last night after struggle with the Cancer. He was 61 years old. Rest in peace,” one person wrote on Facebook.
“Sad news to hear of the passing of actor Rami Heuberger,” a second added. A third chimed in: “May he rest in peace.” Meanwhile a fourth penned: “May his memory be a blessing.”
Rami began his career in the late 1980s. Following his army service, he studied acting at Nissan Nativ’s acting studio in Tel Aviv.
He then went on to star in several stage productions including Macbeth, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Hamlet and Waiting for Godot.
In a 2024 interview, he spoke candidly about his struggle with cancer revealing he was battling sarcoma, which he described as “almost the end.”
He said he endured harsh chemotherapy treatments and admitted at one point he “couldn’t bear it anymore.”
In the same interview, he also said that he had been diagnosed with manic depression years earlier.
Heuberger was married and divorced twice and had two children from his first marriage, and two children from his second marriage.
