October is a time of year for enjoying colorful foliage, apple cider, football — and for many, getting the daylights scared out of them.
If you fall into that latter category, you might want to check out the Wicked Realm Film Festival, a celebration of horror movies scheduled for two creepy but entertaining nights this month.
Wicked Realm 4 will take place at 8 p.m. on two consecutive Saturdays, Oct. 18 and Oct. 25 at Empire Sports of the Southern Tier, 300 N. Main St. in Elmira (the former Trinity Episcopal Church).
The festival, organized by a local film production crew known as Gangster Octopus, was held its first two years at The L in Horseheads, and last year moved to Empire Sports for its third edition.

Unlike last year, when the festival was held every Saturday in October, Gangster Octopus decided to limit the event to two nights this year, according to organizer Chris Chichester.
Featured films for Oct. 18 included “Alzilla,” about an irradiated dog that grows to a huge size and goes on a rampage, “Tormented From the Shadows,” about an evil witch who seeks revenge against a former lover, and “The Humming Grows,” about an MMA fighter who struggles to save her niece from a brutal captor.
The Oct. 25 lineup includes another canine-themed flick, “Dog People,” a horror-comedy about an old lady and her dogs and strange events that occur, “Wicked, Bro,” about a man who accidentally unleashes chaos from a cursed Ouija board, and “Scaffold,” about a man who has to come to grips with his fear of heights while building a scaffold.

Several of the short films were produced locally by Gangster Octopus.
Tickets for the Wicked Realm Film Festival are $15 for each night or $20 for both nights. The gathering is a great way to celebrate the season, Chichester said.
“The event features short horror and sci-fi films from local artists and creators around the world,” he said. “Enjoy food, drinks, Halloween craft vendors, new scenic props, and photo ops. A fun social night to celebrate the spooky season.”
