If Lily Allen’s latest album, West End Girl, hasn’t made its way to your Spotify algorithm or TikTok FYP, it’s time to lock in. Lily released 14 new tracks–marking her first full-length album since 2018’s No Shame—and she seems to chronologically detail the downfall of her four-year marriage with Stranger Things star David Harbour throughout the project. It all started when she moved to London for some acting gigs on the West End, which is when she and David seemingly opened up their relationship under specific conditions.
Two of the tracks on the album—“Tennis” and “Madeline”—allege that David lied about their open arrangement and took a sexual connection with another woman into emotionally romantic territory. “Who the fuck is Madeline?” Lily asks on the track “Tennis,” while she outlines some of the rules in their “arrangement” on “Madeline”: “Be discreet and don’t be blatant / There had to be payment / It had to be with strangers.”
And now (unlike Beyoncé’s “Becky with the good hair” from 2016’s Lemonade), the real Madeline has revealed her identity and reacted to Lily’s West End Girl in an interview with the Daily Mail.
According to the outlet, “Madeline” is actually costume designer Natalie Tippett, who allegedly met David in 2021 on set for his Netflix movie, We Have a Ghost, in New Orleans. Once filming ended, he reportedly flew Natalie to Atlanta to “continue” the affair while filming season 5 of Stranger Things.
When asked if she had heard Lily’s music inspired by the situation, Natalie reportedly “rolled her eyes” and told the Daily Mail, “Of course I’ve heard the song.”
Natalie kept her response minimal, explaining, “I have a family and things to protect. I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, and I understand this is going on. It’s a little bit scary for me.”
On the song, Lily mimics the voice of the other woman and recites messages she had received from her, saying, in an American accent: “I hate that you’re in so much pain right now / I really don’t wanna be the cause of any upset / He told me you were aware this was going on and that he had your full consent / If he’s lying about that, then please let me know / ’Cause I have my own feelings about dishonesty.”
Natalie confirmed that the lyrics were pulled from her messages to Lily, adding, “I just don’t feel comfortable talking about it at the moment.”
For the record, David has yet to weigh in on the West End Girl drama. Back in April, he told GQ that he avoids interacting with tabloids and chatter surrounding his split with Lily.
“I’m protective of the people and the reality of my life. There’s no use in that form of engaging [with tabloid news] because it’s all based on hysterical hyperbole,” he said after a long pause, adding that anything he says would encourage “a salacious shitshow of humiliation.”
