Surveillance footage showing a masked man outside Nancy Guthrie’s home was released nine days after she was reported missing, with a legal expert sharing a possible reason for the delay.
FBI director Kash Patel shared the video on X on Tuesday, February 10. The masked individual could be seen in the clip tampering with Nancy’s doorbell camera and ripping up plants from the property. They used the plants to block themselves from view of the camera.
The individual appeared to be male and wore a balaclava, black gloves and a jacket. They also carried a firearm in the waistband of their pants. The release of the video comes after an ex-FBI agent revealed the hidden codeword that Savannah used in her message to the kidnappers.
Legal expert Chad D Cummings, who is not involved with the case, spoke to The Express US about the delayed release of the footage and explained a possible reason as to why the FBI didn’t release it earlier.
“The delayed release suggests one of two things. Either authorities did not have the footage when they should have, which raises competence issues, or they chose to control the flow of information. I assume it is the latter,” the expert said.
He continued, “When law enforcement staggers disclosure in a high profile case, they shape public perception. They decide what the suspect looks like, how organized he appears, and what narrative takes hold. This creates fodder for the defense team down the road.”
He also said “there is another risk” in releasing the footage too early. Cummings explained, “If the video does not tell the full story, selective release can misdirect.
“It can draw focus to one figure while other facts stay off camera. Agencies test reactions. They watch who calls, who panics, who moves money, who deletes accounts.”
He concluded, “The public sees a masked man on a porch. Investigators may be playing a longer game. That does not mean the footage is false. It means we should not assume we are seeing the entire truth. There is more here; we are not being allowed to see it.”

Alongside the clip, he wrote, “New images in the search for Nancy Guthrie: Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors – including the removal of recording devices.
“The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems. Working with our partners – as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.”
