Prince William surprised royal fans by travelling to Istanbul on Wednesday to watch Aston Villa play against German side Freiburg. The 43-year-old was seen among the Villa fans stepping out to witness their victory in their first European final in 44 years.
The royal has previously attended games alongside his sports-mad eldest son, but Prince George was nowhere to be seen yesterday for one major reason. The 12-year-old, who will mark his thirteenth birthday this summer, was likely absent from yesterday’s game because it was still the school term.
The young royal, who attends Lambrook School in Berkshire alongside his two younger siblings, is thought not to have attended the game with William, as he would have had to be awake bright and early for a busy school day today.
The future King did, however, share that his love for football and Villa has been passed down to his three children.
Speaking to TNT Sports, William said: “I thought, it’s been 43 years since anything like this has happened in my generation as a Villa fan, and I want George to experience a night out away from home in a big European competition.”
He then added: “I hope it’s not 43 years until the next time it happens, but I think those memories are really important to create and to bring him along tonight is a big deal for me.”
George attended a game last year, watching Villa play Paris Saint-Germain at Villa Park.
Speaking at the time, William said he wouldn’t pressure his children to support the same team as him, telling TNT Sports: “I’m generally very open to whoever they support, but obviously I’m a bit biased.”
Much like their big brother, 11-year-old Princess Charlotte and eight-year-old Prince Louis are also huge sporting fans.
