This video is a redrawing of a racist illustration from the Jim Crow era, a period when Black children were frequently depicted through cruel stereotypes rather than humanity.
The original artwork relied on multiple racist tropes:
• exaggerated facial features
• broken English meant to imply lack of intelligence
• watermelon imagery used as mockery
poverty framed as something laughable rather than systemic (racist caricature from the Jim crow era)
The phrase written in the original image was intentionally demeaning, turning a child into a caricature rather than a person.
In this redraw, I erase the original illustration and reimagine the child with dignity and care, removing the stereotypes and restoring her humanity.
This is not about hiding history.
It’s about challenging how racism was normalized through children’s imagery and questioning why these visuals were once considered acceptable.
Art can be used to harm.
Art can also be used to repair…
Redrawing racist history with care.
