Reese Witherspoon shared an update on the long-awaited third season of Big Little Lies.
The series star and executive producer, 50, confirmed on the Monday, June 22 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that season 3 of the HBO drama is “in process.”
The topic came up while Witherspoon was promoting the new Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, for which she serves as an executive producer.
Host Jimmy Fallon joked with Witherspoon that “every time you come on, you tell me nothing” about the show. That wasn’t the case during her latest appearance. “It is in process, for sure,” Witherspoon said.
“I feel like you’re telling the truth,” Fallon, 50, responded, as Witherspoon confirmed, “I am telling the truth.”

The star then pointed to the Aug. 25 release of author Liane Moriarty‘s new sequel book, Big Little Truths. Coming from Penguin Random House subsidiary Crown, the novel marks Moriarty’s first-ever sequel.
As Witherspoon explained, the follow-up will guide the show’s forthcoming season. “You’ll see where we’re at,” she said. “We are making the TV show based on that book.”
Big Little Lies, published in 2014, was adapted into the 2017 HBO series. The show — starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz and Shailene Woodley — later concluded its second season in July 2019.
While season 2 was not based on a book, season 3 will follow the events of Big Little Truths, which takes place over a decade after the initial novel. In the book, Madeline, Celeste and Jane, along with characters Renata and Bonnie, deal with teenage drama as their kids are now high schoolers.

A strange man then begins to lurk around their school, the principal receives a severed finger in the mail, and the crew must confront “the full repercussions of the big little truths they have — and haven’t — shared with their kids, with each other and with themselves,” per a logline.
In a previous statement, Moriarty said “it was fascinating to think about how these characters might have changed” in between her two books. “I found it such a joy to return to this beachside town with Celeste, Madeline and Jane,” the author said. “It felt like I was catching up with old friends. I really hope readers experience that same sense of a reunion.”
Shortly after the book’s announcement, series creator David E. Kelley shared an update on season 3 with PEOPLE while at the New York City premiere of his Apple TV show Margo’s Got Money Troubles. “We’re getting the band back together, and it should be a good run again,” the writer, 70, said, adding that he’s “not allowed” to reveal anything else.
Speaking with Deadline in June, Woodley, 34, confirmed season 3 was “supposedly” happening and explained why she’d like to return for more.
“I love my girls. That’s what makes it so special,” she said. “We’re each other’s people. We love each other and we’re here for each other and, also, it’s a blast to play these characters.”
She added, “I’m really excited about the third season, and for the opportunity that might exist in exploring who these ladies are 10 years later. We’re all 10 years older. The children are all 10 years older. They’re not really children anymore and most of them are adults now. So the prospect of that is very cool.”
