The Legally Blonde star discussed losing out on Rosamund Pike’s role in Gone Girl.
During Wednesday’s episode of the Las Culturistas podcast, Reese Witherspoon recalled that director David Fincher told her she was ‘totally wrong for this part,’ even though Gillian Flynn and other producers on the film had approved her casting.
Additionally, Witherspoon revealed that the author’s support couldn’t change Fincher’s decision not to cast her as Amy Elliott Dunne. The actress said, “David sat me down and this is not on David but David’s like, ‘You’re totally wrong for this part, and I’m not putting you in it.”
Expanding further on the statement, The Morning Show actress admitted the whole incident was an “ego check” for her. In hindsight, she also agreed that she was indeed not the right choice for the role, eventually essayed by Rosamund Pike.
Witherspoon confessed, “And he was right. He was totally right.” However, this did not stop the Academy Award winner from putting her might behind the film and taking up the role as one of the producers of Gone Girl.
“Producing also means get out of the way when you’re supposed to. Do your job to promote, continue to pull people together, continue to build creative groups so that the ultimate result is the best work that it could possibly be. So that was a lesson to me,” the 49-year-old reflected.
Furthermore, Reese Witherspoon revealed she is not upset with David Fincher for not casting her in Gone Girl. She even confessed that the film’s stellar box office performance and rave reviews were a consolation for her.
Moreover, the Walk the Line star praised Fincher and the film’s lead actors. She stated on the podcast, “Fincher just killed it, and Rosamund Pike is so diabolical and Ben Affleck is sort of the rube on the other side of it.”
