The actress, a spokesperson for Wells Fargo, also reveals how she nails book-to-movie adaptations.
Is a third season of “Big Little Lies” on the way? Probably, although when is a little iffy, says Reese Witherspoon, who executive-produced and co-starred in the Emmy-winning HBO series alongside Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Zoe Kravitz, Alexander Skarsgaard and others. Based on a novel by Liane Moriarty, season 2 of the mysterious psychological drama hit streaming in 2019, two years after its premiere season.
“We’re just sort of in early talks … communicating with Liane Moriarty, who has a lot of ideas about where these characters would be now,” Witherspoon, 49, tells USA TODAY. “The children have grown up, they’re now teenagers, it’s been about 10 years… as you can imagine, parenting those age children’s got its sets of challenges.”
How Reese Witherspoon became a book world powerhouse — and first-time author
Moriarty is just one of many star scribes Witherspoon has worked with. The Oscar winner is as much a literary magnate as she is a film star, these days, thanks to her popular book club and company, Hello Sunshine, which has helped steer several book-to-movie adaptations. The process isn’t always easy, she admits.
“You want to capture the essence of the book, and some people are very loyal to the manuscript, but I think you have to have room to make things a little more cinematic,” she says. How she tackles that at Hello Sunshine: “We’re very upfront with them about that we might need to change a few things to fit the format of a movie or television structure,” she says. “Filmmaking is more of a collaboration as opposed to writing a novel, which is more of a solo effort.”
She became an author herself for a recent book project, “Gone Before Goodbye,” teaming up with bestselling suspense master Harlan Coben to co-write the thriller, which hit shelves in October 2025.
The experience, she says, “makes me really appreciate how hard these authors work and all the research they have to do to create these characters.”
Reese Witherspoon reveals the one book she’s want on a desert island
Witherspoon says if she had to choose one title to bring to a desert island, it would be “Broken Country” by Clare Leslie Hall.
“Oh my god, it’s so good,” she says. “It’s a gorgeous love story, but it’s so beautifully written and sparsely written, it’s very well-edited, and the use of language just provokes so many deep feelings about what it means to be alive and be in love.”
It’s part of what she looks for in all her reads. “I love books that take me on a journey to a place I’ve never been,” she says. “Exploring culture and the way of life of different people is a way to expand yourself without ever traveling anywhere.”
Reese Witherspoon’s next stop: Paris
After years of juggling book, TV and film projects, the “Morning Show” star and mom of three (Ava, 26, Deacon, 22, and Tennessee, 13) is ready for some me time. Her partnership with Wells Fargo for their Autograph Journey Card presented “the perfect opportunity,” she says, to travel to Paris to fit some of that in while she also filmed the brand’s new commercial, directed by Taika Waititi.
“I’ve worked in Paris quite a bit, but I haven’t really gotten a lot of opportunities to just be a tourist,” she says.
“I want to have this spirit of ‘finally it’s a little bit of me-time.’ It’s time for me to explore the parts of the world that I haven’t gotten to see because I’ve been so busy working or concentrating on raising kids,” Witherspoon says she told Waititi of the vision for the ad.
