Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala has stepped down from his position at the Alan Wake/Control development studio and will be replaced immediately.
The announcement from Remedy Entertainment doesn’t include reasoning surrounding the sudden exit, but the statement reveals that both Tero Virtala and the Board of Directors of the company have mutually agreed on the exit, and Virtala will step down immediately.
While no reason has been given, Remedy Entertainment’s most recent release and spin-off of Control, FBC: Firebreak, has recently reported heavy underperformance despite the recent overhaul update, Breakpoint. A recent “profit warning” post on Remedy Entertainment’s official site has shown an adjustment on “its 2025 outlook by lowering its guidance on operating profit,” and the new outlook suggested “operating profit (EBIT) to be negative and below the previous year.”
FBC: Firebreak is notably the first multiplayer title in the Remedy Entertainment catalogue, and CGMagazine’s review calls it “a fast-paced and somewhat lighthearted co-op shooter that feels both familiar and truly unique,” and other critics have had middling thoughts on the project. FBC Firebreak sits at a 64% critical reception on Metacritic, and users on Steam have mixed feelings on the spin-off as well.
In the transition period, Remedy’s Board of Directors has appointed Markus Mäki as the company’s interim CEO, effective as of October 22, 2025. Mäki is one of the founders of Remedy, and he has been a member of the Board since 1995 and acting Chairman of the Board until this appointment as interim CEO.
Markus Mäki said, “I want to thank Tero Virtala for his substantial contribution to the management of Remedy since 2016. I personally thank Tero for good cooperation and wish him all the best for the future,” regarding the former CEO’s departure.
While Remedy Entertainment is set to lose previously forecasted gains on operating profit, Remedy confirmed Control 2 development is on schedule, while the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake project is also in the works.
