Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger has signed on for the leading role in the upcoming psychological thriller movie Phantom Son. The project hails from British filmmaker David Yates, who’s best known for directing several Harry Potter movies.
This marks Zellweger’s first non-comedy movie in a long while, after the 2019 biopic Judy, which won her an Oscar for Best Actress. She was most recently seen reprising her iconic role as Bridget Jones in the romantic comedy sequel Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Zellweger also recently starred in the latest season of Only Murders in the Building, in which she played the role of billionaire Camila White.
What do we know about Renée Zellweger’s Phantom Son?
“The film follows Ronnie, a young runaway struggling to survive on the street, who is taken in by Audrey (Zellweger), a lonely woman whose own son was kidnapped 20 years prior,” reads the initial synopsis (via Variety). “As Audrey becomes convinced that Ronnie actually is her long-lost son, a twisted game of cat and mouse develops, blurring the line between deception and delusion.”
Phantom Son will be directed by Yates from a screenplay by Ian Scott McCullough. In addition to leading the cast, Zellweger was also the one who developed the project with Carmella Casinelli through their Big Picture Co. production banner. The movie will be co-produced and financed by AGC Studios. Production is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
