On Tuesday, Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., joked that the behavioral guidelines set out for Congress before King Charles III’s speech read more like a list of allegations against the British royal family than instructions for legislators.
“We were given a list of do’s and don’ts for the King by the Speaker,” said Boebert, told Pablo Reports at the Capitol. “We were told, you know, no selfies, no touching, no hugging, no conversations. And it really sounds like a list of don’ts for the royal family, with victims more than members of Congress. Sounds like everything that his family’s already done.”
The comments follow King Charles’s speech at the joint session of Congress on April 28, 2026, as part of his state visit to the US to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Boebert also wondered whether Democrats would participate, given the rhetoric on executive power from Democrats throughout the year.
“I wonder if the Democratic Party is going to show up,” said Boebert. “They’ve been all about no kings all year, and let’s see how quick they bend the knee and kiss the royal ring. I know AOC is skipping.”
Finally, Boebert finished her comment with a humorous remark about the occasion: “I guess we’re off to see the king in the land of no kings. Isn’t that ironic?”
