Resident Evil Director Rules out Key Character From Franchise for Movie Adaptation originally appeared on GameDaily.
With Weapons being a huge critical and commercial success, Zach Cregger is officially one of the hottest names in Hollywood. He struck gold with 2022’s Barbarian, and Weapons is taking him to even further heights.
However, he already appears to have his next movie lined up. It was previously revealed that he was being tasked with being the one to try and finally make a good Resident Evil movie.
There have been several attempts to adapt the popular video game franchise in live action, but all have failed, including a short-lived Netflix series. Cregger clearly has some great horror chops, and his previous background in comedy makes him a perfect fit to balance the horror and absurdity of the Resident Evil franchise.
While fans of the games should be really excited about Cregger’s movie, they might be disappointed to know that he’s looking to tell a new story. He specifically pointed out that Leon S. Kennedy, the protagonist of Resident Evil 2 and 4, won’t be making an appearance.
“It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story,” Cregger told Inverse. “I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.”
It doesn’t sound like we’ll be getting Leon, but Cregger made it clear that he’s a huge fan of the games.
“I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.”
As long as we get an awesome movie, it’s hard to imagine fans will be too upset if they don’t see all of their favorite characters.
