Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Heather Gay has spoken openly on the show about how much her faith meant to her when she was younger and how tough it was to distance herself from the church. Now, she gets to expose the seedy underbelly of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a limited three-part series called Surviving Mormonism, coming to Bravo and Peacock on November 11.
“The three-part limited series fractures the church’s seemingly perfect veneer to expose the secrets that have been kept behind closed doors,” the official log line reads. “In each hour-long episode, Heather has impactful conversations with abuse survivors, ex-Mormons, and former LDS church leaders. As Heather reflects on her own departure from the church, Surviving Mormonism delves into outdated and controversial practices and empowers victims to share their experiences to bring awareness and enact change.”
In episode one of the series, Gay will be in conversation with David Matheson, a former member of the Mormon church who has been called “the Godfather of conversion therapy.” In the trailer, she says, “Now out and living as a gay man himself, David details the harmful teachings he once practiced and believed in.”
The second and third episode will drop the next day, with the second being titled, “The Highest Level of Heaven” centering around a talk with a former bishop and a friend of hers who shares his allegations of abuse for the first time. This episode gives her the chance to reflect on leaving her friend alone as she says she turned her back on him and explores how his story may be one of many.
In the last episode titled, “Change Is Gonna Come,” she speaks with sisters who said they brought up allegations of abuse against their father to the bishops and church officials, but were “consistently ignored.”
