Mary Cosby received widespread public praise for how she mothered her son through his addiction struggles. The emotional scene, when Robert Cosby Jr. admitted to drug use, was a pivotal moment on Season 5 of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.
Nearly a year later, Mary is giving an update on the situation. Robert spent 30 days in a rehab facility since the RHOSLC episode aired. At the time, the Bravolebrity praised her son for taking that step. But it is still a long journey to recovery.
Mary Cosby calls her son Robert Jr.’s sobriety journey “hardcore”
On September 10, Mary was a guest on SiriusXM’S Reality Checked radio show. She shared with co-host, and Real Housewives of New York alum, Dorinda Medley that Robert Jr. is “doing as good as he can” these days.
Mary clarified on the radio show that “it’s his journey.” And Robert Jr. has to be committed to the process. “If you don’t make your mind up, then this is all for nothing,” she explained of her conversation with him.
The RHOSLC favorite continued, “And if it just takes a made-up mind to do and execute whatever you are trying to do, but you can’t do it if your mind’s not made up. And I can’t make it up for him.”
Mary’s dedication to her only child is very clear. However, she noted that she is still limited on how much she can help. And it’s “tough to watch as a mom.”
“I can just only push him, encourage him and love him. And that’s what I’m doing. That’s kind of where we are,” Mary explained. “But he’s still on that road and it’s a hardcore road.”
However, a mother’s determination and optimism for her child knows no bounds. And Mary is very hopeful. She shared, “I believe in him. I know that his ability, I mean, I raised him, so I know he’s got all the tools and he’s got all the will, the willpower that he needs and the support.”
According to Mary, Robert Jr. “just needs to make up his mind.” But filming that scene for RHOSLC was the “best thing” for her family.
