The Office star Ricky Gervais did not seem impressed by the political speeches that the artists gave at the Grammys this year. The actor and comedian had previously addressed this in a 2020 monologue at the Golden Globes ceremony. He shared his quote from the time and reiterated that the artists were still not listening to him. Many users slammed Gervais for this comment on X.

Ricky Gervais reminds celebrities about not making political statements

Ricky Gervais, who has hosted the Golden Globes five times, spoke about celebrities using their wins to make political speeches in the 2020 ceremony. At the time, the comedian had said, “If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a political platform to make a political speech.” He added, “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”

He reposted the message after this year’s Grammys. The ceremony saw many artists protest the recent ICE raids, which have resulted in the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. He wrote along with the post, “They’re still not listening [laughing emoji].”

This year’s Grammys seemed extremely politically charged as multiple prominent artists, including Billie Eilish, Justin and Hailey Bieber, Justin Vernon, and Jack Antonoff, all sported “ICE Out” pins.

Eilish, known as a vocal critic of the government, took the stage when she won Song of the Year for “Wildflower.” While receiving the award, Eilish said, “No one is illegal on stolen land. And, yeah, it’s just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now, and I feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting, and our voices really do matter, and the people matter.” She added (via Variety), “F**k ICE.”

Bad Bunny also said “ICE Out” during his acceptance speech for Album of the Year. “We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are humans, and we are Americans…. hate gets more powerful with more hate. The only thing that is more powerful than hate is love. So please, we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love,” he said.

Other artists also said things on similar lines.

But Gervais does not seem to agree with the practice of using the platform to speak about politics. But many users on X seem to think Gervais is wrong in the claim. They made the same clear in the comments of the post by the English comedian.
