Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner were found dead at their home with reported “stab wounds”. The US director and actor was found dead alongside his wife at their home in Los Angeles. A source close to the pair has now told NBC that they were found with multiple stab wounds. It has since been reported that police have confirmed to PEOPLE that their son Nick, 32, is being questioned by investigators.
The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were found dead inside their home. Detectives from the LAPD Robbery Homicide Division have been assigned the case. After a large police presence at the house, LAPD Captain Mike Bland stated they were investigating an “apparent homicide”. Emergency services were called to their home on Chadbourne Avenue in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles around 3:30pm on Sunday, December 15. The Los Angeles Times reported there was no signs of forced entry into the home.
The family released a statement following the tragic news, telling Variety: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Tributes have since poured in for Reiner, with the Screen Actors Guild, which represents thousands of actors, journalists and performers, paid tribute in a statement which read: “Rob Reiner is one of the most significant figures in the history of film and television. The impact he made on American culture simply can’t be overstated. Tributes will pour in and the impossibly long list of genre defining films and indelible performances will play in our minds and hearts. Rob Reiner was a member of our union for nearly 60 years. We send love and warmth to Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner’s families, friends and colleagues.”
LA Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement on their passing, describing their loss as “a devastating blow for our city and our nation”.
“Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” added.
Michele Reiner, Rob’s wife of thirty years, was also an accomplished producer, actor and photographer and worked alongside her husband on many of his famous projects. They met on the set of When Harry Met Sally, with Reiner stating their own romance inspired the film’s ending. They married in 1989, the year the film came out, and had three children together, Jake, Nick and Romy.
