Robert Irwin is opening up about his sister Bindi Irwin‘s health and her courageous — and painful — battle with endometriosis.
In an interview with People published on September 3, the Dancing with the Stars contestant, 21, revealed that Bindi’s condition is “an ongoing battle.”
“Endometriosis is one of these things where it’s not a quick fix,” he told the outlet. “It is something that I really think needs to be [at] the forefront of discussions,” he added, calling out how “women’s health throughout history” remains “under-discussed” and “under-researched.”
Endometriosis is a disease where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing excruciating pain, and prolonged periods according to endofound.org.
In May, Bindi, 27, shocked fans when she shared via Instagram that she’d undergone another major surgery to treat the condition. Doctors removed a staggering 51 endometriosis lesions, plus a cyst and her appendix.
The wildlife conservationist first revealed her diagnosis to the world in 2023 and shared details on her endometriosis surgery to remove “37 lesions, some very deep & difficult to remove, & a chocolate cyst.”
However, Bindi recently celebrated a major milestone. “[I’m] genuinely healing,” she said via social media on August 13. “I can function in everyday life without wanting to throw up or pass out from the pain.”
Now she’s channeling that renewed energy into supporting Robert on season 34 of DWTS — the same show she conquered in 2015. As Star has previously reported, Bindi has temporarily relocated to Los Angeles with her 4-year-old daughter, Grace, to cheer him on.
“If you’re wondering who will be cheering the loudest in the audience — it will definitely be me and Grace,” shared Bindi.
