Robert Irwin, the son of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, won “Dancing With The Stars” on Tuesday night, securing the trophy 10 years after his big sister, Bindi, won it.
“To follow in those footsteps and to do the same has meant everything to me,” Robert Irwin told People after his win. “This has absolutely changed my life.”
Robert Irwin and his partner Witney Carson dominated the season, scoring 10s when they danced the Argentine tango, Paso doble, freestyle and more.
During week five, the celebrities dedicated a dance to a person of their choosing, and Robert Irwin dedicated his dance to his mother, Terri Irwin, calling her an “absolute hero.”
“I was 2 when I lost Dad,” Robert Irwin said on the show. “And as I got older, I’ve just realized how hard it would have been for her.”
The Irwin kids were thrust into the international spotlight after their father, Steve Irwin, died in 2006 after suffering an attack from a stingray while filming a documentary, shocking fans. During Steve Irwin’s memorial service, Bindi Irwin, at age 8, delivered an emotional speech, calling her dad her hero.
On Bindi Irwin’s season of “Dancing With The Stars” in 2015, she dedicated one of her dances to her late father, saying on the show that she sometimes feels like he will still come home.
Bindi and Terri Irwin showed their support for Robert Irwin throughout the season and were in the audience when he won.
Robert Irwin told reporters after his triumph that he had a dream to follow in his sister’s footsteps, and on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday morning, he added that he remembers watching Bindi Irwin win the competition 10 years ago, calling it a “privilege” to do the same.
“That pressure was there, but it was just the pressure to be the best version of ourselves because we just wanted to say thank you because I had no idea what to expect coming over, but the way everyone in America was just so kind and so embracing,” he said.
Robert Irwin beat out social media star Alix Earle, reality TV star Dylan Efron, and Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles for the title. Before the finale, Earle posted a TikTok crying, reflecting on her time on “Dancing With The Stars,” saying it was something she always wanted to do.
“This show has just given me reason to prove,” Earle said in the TikTok, “that I do work hard and I don’t know, I feel like it’s been able to show me in a new light.”
