Robert Pattinson was unable to open The Batman Part II script because it was under such high security.
The Twilight star is reprising his role as the Caped Crusader for a sequel to the 2022 movie and producers are determined to keep details of the new film under wraps so the script was sent to the actor in a locked pouch which can only be opened with a code – but the measure backfired as Pattinson found himself unable to open it.
Director Matt Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter: “So, Benito, who’s my assistant, he goes and seeks out a very, very high security pouch that has a code on it that then we have to send separately.
“And then [Robert] was like: ‘I can’t open it.’ I said: ‘I know, here’s the code.’ He opened it, and then we had a FaceTime after he read. It was very exciting.”
Reeves went on to reveal he felt relieved when the actor gave the script the thumbs up.
He added: “He’s Batman, and if he doesn’t like it, not good. I was super excited. I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman and for Bruce [Wayne], have never been done before in this way.
“I had a feeling that he would respond in this way, but the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging.”
The moviemaker added of the tight security around the project: “Obviously because of what the first movie was and what this movie is, which is so much a detective story, the idea of trying to protect the secrets of the movie is super important because it’s a mystery.
“It would be an extra level of heartbreak if that part of it started getting out.”
Reeves previously revealed he’s proud of the new story and he’s hoping to start filming The Batman Part II in the spring.
He told Variety: “We start shooting [the film] in spring, probably around the end of April or beginning of May.
“It’s been a long journey, but I am so incredibly excited. I’m really proud of the script me and Mattson [Tomlin] did, and we’ve started to share it with Robert [Robert].”
Pattinson previously admitted he felt the weight of pressure and expectation in The Batman and claimed Reeves was such a “perfectionist” during the shoot that he couldn’t remove his costume.
He told SFX magazine: “I guess in some big movies, people can kind of phone it in. On this, there’s a legacy of really, really good movies – there’s never really been a dud, so everyone brings their A game.
“Also the way Matt directs as well, he’s such a perfectionist. But you’re never really off the set from the second you arrive in the morning. It’s not like you can go back to a trailer or anything. Especially me … I couldn’t even get out of the costume!”
