Robin Roberts is currently absent from Good Morning America.
The TV host announced she had flown to South Africa to film a new Lifetime movie called Angel in the Rubble, starring Sherri Shepherd and Dondré T. Whitfield.
The movie is being produced by Robin’s production company, Rock’n Robin.
Robin Roberts is on hiatus from Good Morning America—but it’s for a very good reason!
The TV host anchors the news desk at GMA, but that’s not the only thing on her plate. Robin also runs her company, Rock’n Robin Productions, which has produced a variety of movies and TV shows over the years.
Well, it looks like Robin is putting on her producer hat, based on her latest Instagram post. On May 31, she told her followers that she and her wife, Amber Laign, had traveled to South Africa—but not for a vacation. Instead, Robin is filming a new movie for Lifetime, called Angel in the Rubble. The movie stars Sherri Shepherd and Dondré T. Whitfield and is expected to premiere later in 2026.
“Made it to South Africa for the filming of my upcoming @lifetimetv movie starring @sherrieshepherd & @alldondre. 🎬👏🏽,” she wrote in the caption alongside a photo of her and Amber. “The Mrs joined me on the looong flight so need a moment to sit back and count our blessings! 💕.”
Shortly after Robin posted the update, Dondré responded in the comments.
“And when I say I enjoyed you both!!!!” he replied. “I gained [two] great sisters yesterday. Looking forward to this movie and our movement.”
Fans wished Robin good luck with the production.
“Welcome to South Africa 😃🇿🇦 @robinrobertsgma best wishes for your upcoming movie 🙂,” one person wrote in the comments. “Enjoy your time together and much success with filming your movie,” another agreed. “One of my favorite countries. Enjoy your time there!” a different follower added.
Angel in the Rubble is based on the best-selling book Angel in the Rubble: The Miraculous Rescue of 9/11’s Last Survivor, according to a March report from Deadline. The film will follow NYC transit worker Genelee Guzman (portrayed by Sherri) as she fights for her life after being buried underneath Tower One for 27 hours. A man named Paul (played by Dondré) finds her and stays by her side through her rescue. Later on, though, no one could confirm his presence, leading her to believe he was an angel.
We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for this! And hopefully, Robin returns to GMA soon.
