Over the course of his legendary career, rocker Billy Idol, 69, has released quite a few massive hits, but one of the most memorable would have to be “White Wedding.” Not only has the 1982 song been featured in dozens of movies and TV shows, including The Wedding Singer, but it’s also been used by plenty of newlyweds in their own white weddings — both during the ceremony and the reception.
More than 40 years after the song’s release, Idol opened up about the inspiration behind it while chatting with Absolute Radio this week, and the true meaning of “White Wedding” is a lot darker than some may have thought.
Idol explained that the concept of the song was born as his younger sister, Jane Broad, was getting married, but his imagination took over from there.
“I just thought, ‘what about if she was pregnant?’ That would be a shotgun wedding,” he said. “I started to think about it in a negative way … like, what about if I was some avenging brother who was coming back to — I don’t know, wreak some sort of vengeance.”
From there, Idol had the concept of the song set.
“It just gave me a way in to write that song,” he said. “Also, I was starting my career again, and in a way that’s what I’m singing about as well.”
Billy Idol Has Admitted There’s Something “Incestuous” About “White Wedding”
This isn’t the first time that Idol has opened up about the “White Wedding” meaning. Back in 2002, he shared that his true inspiration was not just his sister’s nuptials, but also how taboo getting pregnant out of wedlock still was at that time.
“I thought about all the different people and all the times past when that was such a taboo thing,” he said at the time, via American Songwriter. “I thought about that, the taboo nature and the convention and the wedding being such a celebration but then it turns into something like a shotgun wedding. Then it went on from there.”
And for fans who think they may have picked up on some incestuous vibes in the song? Well, they might not be totally off base.
“Then I thought about this incestuous kind of sick brother… who’s galavanting across the globe on some wild, who knows what he’s looking for, leading a completely unconventional life, leaving behind all your friends and just going and going and all those things started to play into the song,” he said.
In the end, that inspiration created one of Idol’s most recognizable songs… and for a musician with a discography like his, that’s really saying something!
