Letting go of the need for control takes center stage on The Maine’s latest single. The band has shared a new music video for “Palms,” out now, the latest preview of their album ‘Joy Next Door,’ also out now.
The song captures a very modern kind of restlessness, the difficulty of letting life unfold on its own terms and the constant urge to hold onto control no matter what. At the chorus, frontman John O’Callaghan sings: “Don’t think, it all happens for a reason, f*** that, well the night is unknown, don’t think, let it happen.”
O’Callaghan opened up about the track’s winding path to completion. “‘Palms’ was written at zero hour. And while the demo took all but 30 minutes while I was at home, we didn’t get it to final form for another couple months after. It may have been a function of thinking too much, but I’m glad we clawed our way through to get it to where you hear it now because it brings a little levity and balance to Joy Next Door. Plus, my four-year-old loves to hear her Dada say the F word. I hope you dig it, too (the song, not just the swear word.)”
The Maine also performed their single “Die To Fall” on The Kelly Clarkson Show this spring, adding another highlight to a packed year for the band.
‘Joy Next Door’ arrives at a high point in The Maine’s career, and stands as arguably the band’s most essential album yet. True to the band’s longstanding appreciation for album craft, the record was written and recorded in sequential order to reinforce its storytelling arc. Continuing a tradition of assigning each era a specific color, this one belongs to green.
Drummer Pat Kirch explained the connection. “Every album of ours has a color that represents it, and Joy Next Door is the green era. The green grass on the album art feels like it matches perfectly with the organic instrumentation and imperfections left intact on the album.”
With more than one billion global streams and over a million followers across social platforms, The Maine has built a devoted fanbase across nearly two decades, releasing nine studio albums between 2008 and 2023, five of which charted on the Billboard 200. Since their 2008 debut ‘Can’t Stop Won’t Stop,’ the band has carved its own path, including a Top Five Alternative Radio hit in 2022 with “Loved You A Little.” Their touring history spans festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, along with headlining their own sold-out 8123 Fest in their hometown of Tempe, Arizona.
The band heads to Europe this September for their biggest European outing to date, an eight-city run across Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the UK.
