Rosie O’Donnell is getting real about cosmetic surgery, and more specifically, her cosmetic surgery.
Back in the day, the former talk show host was a strong proponent of face-lifts, cosmetic “refreshes,” and going under the knife altogether when it came to beauty standards in Hollywood. In a 2021 interview with Vulture, Rosie O’Donnell took a firm stance against the pressure women face to alter their appearance, criticizing the entertainment industry’s obsession with youth and perfection.
“I wasn’t going to have plastic surgery. I was going to look the way a woman my age should look, and I always thought that would be a blessing in my older age,” she told the publication.
However, in recent social posts, Rosie O’Donnell explained why she ultimately changed her mind and revealed the personal circumstances that led to that decision, opening up about the emotional and physical journey behind her new perspective on cosmetic procedures.
In an honest and open post on Instagram and Substack on May 25 titled “decisions,” the former daytime host and comedian shared a poetic, emotional essay written in stanza style about her choice to undergo the surgery, explaining that her recent weight loss ultimately led to the decision, although it caused significant inner conflict in her life.
“I used to feel very strongly about facelifts
Not casually — morally.
I had assigned myself as head
of all women who would never – ever.
I thought it was a betrayal.
Of feminism. Of aging.
Of our team of women worldwide.
And then I lost 50 pounds…
It wasn’t wrinkles—
It was gravity
I’d look in the mirror and think, this isn’t aging,
this is…melting with intention.
I tried to be evolved about it.
and say things like,
‘This is natural. This is earned.’
And then…’Umm, how earned does it have to look?”
There’s a point where acceptance
starts to feel like lying.”
In the post, O’Donnell went on to describe experiencing a “full existential feminist crisis” over the decision. But in the end, she admitted she “never liked secrets,” explaining that pretending her “rejuvenated lower face” had happened naturally didn’t sit right with her. Instead, being honest about the procedure ultimately helped her come to terms with herself, her struggles, aging, and the person she has become in her 60s.
The post ends with the stanza, “For the girl I was, the woman I am, and all those joining my ranks, as we carry on in Act 3,” wrote O’Donnell. “This is me.”
Reactions to the post have been largely supportive, with fans reaching out to praise her vulnerability, while others thanked her for speaking openly about aging, self-image, and the complicated emotions that can come with cosmetic procedures. “Thanks for being transparent. It makes everyone feel better being honest. If you do it, might as well be honest about it,” wrote one fan. Another posted, “You go, girl. Beautiful inside and out. NO [ONE] HAS THE RIGHT TO JUDGE ANYONE ELSE!!!!”
“Everyone should have access to and do what will bring improvement to their life,” posted one Instagram user, while another wrote, “Totally get it. I have said I’d never, ever do it, and now that I’m here. Hey, I might need to fill some of those lines on my forehead. I don’t like seeing them. I don’t care what anybody else sees, but I don’t wanna see it.”
