The late Prince Philip was infamous for blurting out inappropriate comments — and his grandson Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle was no exception.
“Once all the formalities were over, we watched as the happy couple, and then the other members of the Royal Family, filed out of the chapel,” former palace staffer Grant Harrold writes of the May 19, 2018 event in his memoir, The Royal Butler, per an excerpt published in The Telegraph on Monday, August 18.
“When Prince Philip came out, he turned to the Queen and said, ‘Thank f**k that’s over,’” Harrold reveals.
The royal family hasn’t commented on Harrold’s book, which is due out in September.

It’s unclear what prompted the Duke of Edinburgh’s remarks, though royal commenters have said that Philip was welcoming to Meghan, 44, when she and Harry, 40, first got together. “He knows what it’s like to be an outsider, and so he’s always very supportive of people marrying into the family,” royal biographer Ingrid Seward wrote in her book, Prince Philip Revealed.
But his feelings changed over time, Seward told GB News, and he began comparing her to Wallis Simpson, the American divorcée who caused King Edward VII to abdicate the throne, which eventually led to Elizabeth II becoming queen.
“There are so many similarities, which is why he used to call her The Duchess of Windsor, I mean, not to her face.”

Still, Philip frequently made offensive and off-color remarks at state events — so much so that he reportedly coined the term “dontopedalogy” to describe the art of putting one’s foot in one’s mouth.
When he passed away at 99 on April 9, 2021, Harry, who recently paid tribute to his grandpa on the August 15 anniversary of VJ Day, released a statement praising his Philip as a “legend of banter, and cheeky right ’til the end.”
