The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into Frogmore Cottage in Windsor back in 2019, shortly after their wedding.
In total, £2.4 million was spent renovating it with money borrowed from the Sovereign Grant, which was promptly paid back.
A spokesperson for the couple said in 2020: “A contribution has been made to the Sovereign Grant by The Duke of Sussex.
“This contribution, as originally offered by Prince Harry, has fully covered the necessary renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage, a property of Her Majesty The Queen.…”
What renovations were made to Frogmore Cottage?
Harry and Meghan used the money in part to convert Frogmore from two semi-detached houses into one home.
Features included four bedrooms and a nursery.
Harry and Meghan moved out of Frogmore Cottage in 2020 after stepping away from senior royal duties.
The couple relocated to North America, but retained the residence as a home base in England when they visited.
In 2023, it was requested by King Charles that they hand the keys back to Frogmore Cottage.
Plans are now underway to potentially subdivide the property again, Cosmopolitan reports.
“It’s been empty for three years,” a source told the publication.
They continued: “Maybe if they get rid of any trace of Harry and Meghan, then someone within the royal household will fancy it.
“It would draw the line under Frogmore Cottage’s controversial history and return it to the pre-Meghan and Harry era.”
