KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The final nail in the 2025 Kansas City Royals coffin was hammered Tuesday night in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Cleveland Guardians, storming up the AL Wild Card race and into contention for the AL Central, rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Detroit Tigers, 5-2.
Cleveland’s win, its 85th of the season, officially closed the book on the Kansas City Royals’ minuscule chances of reaching the playoffs entering the last week of the season. Entering the final week, Kansas City needed to go 6-0 and have the Guardians and Houston Astros each go winless.
Instead, Kansas City will set its sights on the 2026 season, unable to follow up on an American League Division Series appearance in 2024. A significant roadblock for the Royals in 2025 was the month of June, which they went 8-18 in.
The Royals were plagued by one of the worst offenses in baseball for much of the 2025 season and have also dealt with injuries to several key pitchers, including Cole Ragans, Kris Bubic and Seth Lugo.

Kansas City at 78-78 begins a six-game road trip to end the season Tuesday night in Los Angeles against the Angels. They’ll close the season with three games this weekend against the Athletics.
The Royals do have a chance to conclude the 2025 season with a .500 or better record still. It would be just the sixth time in the last 14 years that Kansas City has finished with 81 or more wins.
