John Wathan is the newest member of the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame.

Wathan received the special call Thursday after spending 47 memorable years in KC’s Major League Baseball organization.

He is the first inductee in the 2026 class and will become the 32nd member of the Royals Hall of Fame — joining the likes of George Brett, Alex Gordon, Ned Yost and Bo Jackson.

Wathan’s induction is well deserved. He held multiple roles with the Royals after being selected fourth overall in the 1971 January Draft and playing 10 years for the organization. During that span, he posted a .262 batting average with 656 hits and a .661 OPS (on-base plus slugging).

“After 52 years in baseball and 47 with the Royals, I can honestly say I have always bled Royal blue,” Wathan, 76, said in a news release. “This is the ultimate honor for living as a Royal all those years. I couldn’t begin to thank everyone involved on this journey with me. It has been a real privilege to be with one organization that long. It is a rare feat and one that I have been so proud of for all these years.”

The Royals were successful during Wathan’s tenure. The native Iowan was part of KC’s first divisional title and World Series run. After his playing career, he worked for the club as a minor-league coach and in player development.

Wathan would later become the Royals’ manager. He went 287-270 in five seasons, leading KC to 92 victories in 1989. He still has the fifth-most managerial wins in club history; his .515 winning percentage ranks fourth.

Wathan also held a role in the broadcast booth, remaining with the Royals in some capacity until his retirement after the 2022 season. Now he will be recognized for his long tenure in and with Kansas City.

“Few people in this organization have impacted the Royals the way ‘Duke’ has — serving in so many roles and contributing at such a high level over so many years,” Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said, referring to Wathan by his nickname.

“This honor is incredibly well deserved for Duke and his family,” Picollo said, “and we’re proud to recognize a professional life devoted to the Royals and to Kansas City.”

The Royals will continue to roll out the members of their 2026 Hall of Fame class in coming weeks. The date for a ceremony involving Wathan has yet to be announced.

Established in 1986, the Royals Hall of Fame honors players, coaches and team personnel who have contributed to the success of the team on and off the field. Wathan was elected by the Royals Hall of Fame Veterans Committee.
