A week and a half ago, MLB’s trade deadline came and went. The Royals were among the more active teams and made a variety of deals. With enough time to consider both the likely thought processes and some of the early returns, Royals fans felt the team deserved a B for their efforts.
Again, it was a super-majority who felt the team deserved more than just a passing grade with a full 82% voting for either an A or B.
That makes sense when you consider that Ryan Bergert is already flashing improved movement on his secondary pitches which allows him to steal called strikes with his sweeper and collect whiffs with his slider and changeup. Mike Yastrzemski has led off a couple of times and is slashing .214/.281/.536/.817 since joining the Royals. Adam Frazier is slashing .302/.328/.415/.743, and Stephen Kolek, though pitching for Omaha, has looked terrific with a 2.92 ERA and ten strikeouts to only one walk since joining them.
Things haven’t been as bright and sunny for Randal Grichuk or Bailey Falter, but they’ve shown some flashes that there might be good things in their future, too.
The best part was that the Royals didn’t trade away any well-regarded prospects, and all three pitchers are under control but are given no guarantees for multiple years, allowing the Royals a huge advantage if they work out and no downside if they don’t.
